JVC UX-G28

$100.00 Released February, 2008

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Sound quality isn't bad: mids and upper bass are well-represented and talk radio is quite clear. Built-in multi-function EQ for sound adjustment--a feature missing from many competing shelf systems. Very long speaker cables.

The Cons:AM antennae is quite cumbersome. Button design makes it hard to read which button does what unless you're looking directly at the unit. Audio played from any source results in a soft hissing noise accompanying treble.

The JVC UX-G28 is small and in comparison to other shelf audio systems, it is cheap.  It plays CD-R/RW with tags, has 10cm speakers, and contains a 2.0 USB host for external devices.  It has some additional features such as front audio input, a clock, a timer, and four sound modes: rock, pop, classic, and jazz.

Where to Buy

Its visual design leaves something to be desired -- it is black and shaped like a rectangle.  The lack of extensive features and the uninspired design are easily overwhelmed by its compact size (good for apartments or tight spaces) and its reasonable price.

To get any adequate bass performance, the unit needs to be placed very close to a wall.
